Toilet Overflows Causes Water Damage and Needed CleanUp in Island Park

SERVPRO's Experience Mitigates Water Damage Caused by Faulty Toilet Functioning in Island Park

Say water or flood damage and people imagine thunderstorms, water up to the knees and photo albums floating in the basement. In many cases, a small amount of water can cause as much damage depending on the source of the water and what is in it.

An overflowing toilet in an Island Park home can cause hundreds of dollars in damage if it is not taken care of quickly. There is the threat of contaminated water, ruined carpets, and cabinets that need to be dried or replaced. SERVPRO has the experience and tools needed to repair and restore your home of all these issues. If the excess water originated from the holding tank or the water supply line behind the commode, then the water is not initially contaminated and designated as Black Water. Even urine filled water that may backup is typically pathogenically hazardous.

Our first step to deal with contaminated water is to spray all affected areas with a disinfectant as we approach. Spraying begins to kill bacteria and viruses from the moment we start work. Next, we remove any solid matter that has come up through the plumbing. Technicians place it into a hazmat bag or bucket for disposal outside the home.

Now, the contaminated water is pumped out. Since the amount of water from an overflow is usually small, our response team use extractors to draw it out from the floor and carpets. Once they finish, every surface that was exposed is sprayed with a disinfectant and scrubbed.

In the case of contaminated water, we recommend replacement of carpets and carpet pads. It is cost effective to launder small, bathroom or area rugs, but the cost to clean and restore larger carpets is often more than replacing them.

Bathroom cabinets become quickly contaminated as well. The wood can be disinfected and cleaned easily with little cost other than labor. If the water from the toilet has stood for more than a day or two, disinfecting may not be an option, and we recommend replacement of the cabinets and perhaps even the floor trim around the bathroom walls.

What seems like simple repairs or clean-ups can often become much more time-consuming and expensive. If you have a plumbing issue of any type, SERVPRO of Rexburg / Rigby is here to help. Call us today at (208) 356-0263 to get started.
